Trying but still not there

Pros

Free lunch, generous time off, and the coworkers are fantastic

Cons

Lack of synergy between leadership and the people on the front lines. In my time there, people were regularly expected to do more with less resources and support. This included but was not limited to outdated systems, yearly goals that weren’t rolled out until May, and different messages depending on who in leadership was delivering it. One underwriting unit saw 100% turnover in leadership in a two year span.

Pros

Parking is free, although that's expected outside of downtown. Expect a long walk if you get in after 8am. Lunch is free although you won't want to eat what they serve. Employee gardens are available.

Cons

Max 3% raise annually regardless of performance, bonuses are low or nonexistent, and base salary is not competitive with other companies in the area. Health insurance rates are poor, no home/auto discount for employees now that personal lines is sold, company and employees have created a culture that is afraid of change and technology. Vital systems go down on a weekly basis sometimes for hours at a time. Building is old and leaking with plumbing issues.

Pros

Cheap cost of living in the Des Moines, IA area.

Cons

During my tenure at the organization, I have seen upper level management come and go. The last three CEOs have been paid huge salaries all the while they produce poor results. There seems to be no accountability and if you are related to senior executives, you can get away with just about anything. Communication is the worst I have seen during my years at GuideOne and morale is at an all time low. The senior management team now is the worst I have seen and that is saying a lot. This is a good old boys club and they do nothing to hide it.
