Initial training is challenging but definitely worth the journey. Compensation probably a touch under market but there is a lot that makes up for that.

Since the work at LegitScript is very specific, the initial training period may be somewhat steep and challenging, however the process has become a lot more smooth and supportive since the time I started working here. Some people may feel the pressure to move to a new role and do something new/different vs staying in their current position - this process may be natural for many people, who want to keep moving up and constantly try something different. However it's a feeling of pressure for those who just want to continue working at their current position, learn more and do what they are good at. With that said, I need to mention that LegitScript is still a quickly-growing company, and continuous and rapid changes is something you should be able to accept and embrace.

I've been working at LegitScript for more than 8 years. Looking back so far, it has been a very rewarding career for me both in terms of experience, intellectual stimulation, and possibilities for upward advancement. Analysts start with an extensive in-house training program which is amazing knowing that we operate in a highly specialized industry. The work we do is intellectually stimulating because we are constantly at the forefront of identifying new criminal trends and patterns. It's common we get to read in the news of work we have done to go against illegal activity. Analysts are trained to think like a criminal and use the best of their abilities to make a difference. Sure, I started at a relatively low salary back in 2012 but the company has provided me every opportunity for upwards mobility and career growth. Besides that, the benefits package often goes unnoticed but is very generous compared to what I hear from people working at other companies. (For years, LegitScript has either lowered or kept insurance cost the same while maintaining a great coverage, matches people's 401k contribution and FSA accounts.) I've been cross trained on basically every team in the company and even got the ability to grow out of the analyst team and into an assistant director role on the client partnerships team. That has not always come easy or quick but being invested and giving your best to the company never goes unnoticed. The company spends a lot of time on building a healthy company culture and listening to employee input. Working at LegitScript has been a great career for me and I recommend it to anyone looking for an interesting and rewarding job.

In case any of the previous reviews didn't make it clear, management is rotten to the core and is solely responsible for the mass exodus and turnover the company routinely experiences. At the heart of the managerial woes are two central themes: "Legitscript Values," and intransigence. The "Legitscript Values," read more like a cultish mantra than guidelines for a successful company. And similar to a cult, they're used to bludgeon people into meek submission at any sign of dissent. The values are "Be Awesome, Be Open, Be Thoughtful, Be Invested.” If they seem relatively vague, it’s because they’re intentionally designed that way. Additionally, these values are a one-way street from management to everyone else. Disagree with your manager? That’s not very thoughtful of you. Ask for more transparency about decisions? Actually it’s you who needs to be more open about how a company is run, not us. Any divergence with management can, and will be framed in terms of “culture misalignment.” I can count at least two dozen people that were let go on these grounds, including an entire tech team. At some point management has to ask themselves, were there really 20-odd people that didn’t culturally fit, or is it us? A previous review mentioned walking on eggshells here, and that’s a very pithy way of putting things, and those eggshells are labelled Awesome, Open, Thoughtful, and Invested. The other issue is intransigence. Management at Legitscript refuses to change their mind on anything, and cannot accept shifts in the way society thinks, or how other people think. This is because Legitscript is, and always will be John Horton, the CEO. All management is just an extension of his views and prejudices towards certain topics. For instance, he previously called marijuana an addictive drug and said smoking marijuana has no medicinal value. This sort of rigidity and ideological uniformity (because again, nobody who disagrees is promoted into senior management) shapes Legitscript policy and reporting standards in such a way that de facto forces employees to engage in behavior they know is wrong. Just about everyone I’ve ever worked with at Legitscript had at one point expressed serious reservations about the work they do (which includes shutting down websites, business accounts, advertisements, etc.), and LegitScript itself has been mired in controversy and lawsuits from its inception. However, no serious challenge to these can ever be made, and this gives anyone on management carte blanche to take action against employees who express opposition to any of their moral views. If you’re applying here, know what you’re getting into and take all the recent reviews to heart. If this many people, are willing to write these many scathing reviews all centered around the same topic, there’s probably more than a nugget of truth to it.

There seems to be a top-down culture of marginalizing workers, exploiting well-meaning people, then discarding them at first chance. Workloads increase every year, but the benefit package shrinks annually too. Low wages have been the top concern on the annual employee satisfaction survey each time it’s been taken. Misrepresenting capabilities to clients then trying to bridge the gap with human effort is the operating norm here, in my opinion. Turnover is around 30% annually and there are very few long term employees (for good reason). I also regularly heard my management group making fun of workers in meetings (yes- childish, personal ridicule based on appearance, perceived intelligence, personal interests, etc). Favorite targets of this male dominated group were usually women on the product team, women in other leadership roles in the company, "under-performing" team members, and sometimes openly LGBTQ employees. This went on during and after the company was conducting "sensitivity training" and issuing memos about creating a positive workplace. Yikes. Trust me and the rest of the recent reviews here. You don't want anything to do with Legitscript, its horrible workplace culture, or its anti-worker CEO John Horton. The overall working environment has only gotten worse since the sale last year to private equity firms and renewed focus on pumping the company’s perceived value before the inevitable dump.
