Pros

It's a good company, a bit sluggish and not exactly cutting edge, but still a good place to work. It's obvious why AGM bought MIK...easily affordable with some easy ways to increase profitability...squeeze more...then sell it off or put on chopping block. First place to start cutting... the over-compensated layer after layer of folks that just won't get the hint. "time to leave" at Support Center. Many have been there decades, are underperformers, over compensated, and tossing them will help financials and allow innovation that has been suppressed for decades. It's a good plan, Directors, VP and higher are disappearing by the day and most cannot wait for AGM to toss the rest of the "dead weight" overboard.

Cons

Not alot, its a good place. Again, easy target for AGM, since they can dump 1/2 of support center and never miss a beat...folks are disappearing everywhere and this is a good thing. Even with the "all is well" from those that scored millions last year with golden parachutes (it is well for them), it's obvious more upper level cuts need to happen...soon. It may be a bit sad watching the endless "decision to pursue other opportunities" exodus, but, in about a year they will have switched out the existing VP/Director/Manager levels with outside hire performers and this will mean success.

Pros

The customers were mostly great. The staff was also wonderful. In my store, management was also a pleasure to work for.

Cons

Absolutely ridiculous top down mentality and policies made by people who often have never spent a single day running a store or even working in one. The level of micromanaging over the 2 years I spent there got worse and worse over time. There is no respect for the employees or the amount of work they are expected to complete in an impossible time frame. 2 holidays a year.....that's it. The rest you just work like a regular workweek. The number of hours given to the store has gotten so ridiculous that corporate no longer even listens to the customer complaints about "no staff available" to help anyone. In a moments notice hours are ripped away - often on a weekend when staff is the most necessary. Employees are so stressed they call out constantly. It's just not worth it. For the company to understand what a day is like in a high volume store - all of the DMs, RMs and up should have to work a week in our shoes. The perspective would be much different. You can do only so much "more with less" before your business model becomes an absolute joke and you can't get anyone to work for you anymore. I certainly see that in the district I came from. We couldn't fill slots, and the ones we did were often gone in months. You can expect only so much when you work people to the bone and pay them peanuts.

A Company in Decline

Pros

Good Part-Time job if you need your first job; don't expect great pay.

Cons

Michaels is cutting corners and abusing employees to prop up their bottom line. It's basically indentured servitude in cheap wrapping and a red bow. The pay is AWFUL, yet Store Managers, District Managers and Executives are riding on the backs of their employees to the bank to cash fat bonus checks. I've watched Michaels go from a company that values employees and customers, to a company that pinches pennies and stretches employees too thin with bare minimum staffing and unrealistic expectations. The fact that their idea of fringe benefits is peanut butter and jelly sandwiches says everything you need to know.
