Pros

The home office will pay for all of your licensing (I received SIE, Series 6, 63, & 65). The San Diego branch has many advisors that genuinely want you to succeed.

Cons

By their words they will never admit that they want you to focus on selling life insurance but by their actions (mainly their compensation structure and short 6 month salary) you either find clients with millions to rollover into managed accounts or you sell life insurance to active duty military. At the end of 6 months you're 100% commission dependent and will have a ~$1,500 monthly office bill due on top of the basic cost of living in San Diego. This company is great if your young and willing live on a tight budget for 3-5 years possible working a second job to supplement the lack of income or if you're someone who has a pension income who's looking for a second career. Otherwise this company positions itself as a stepping stone to get licensed.

Thank you for sharing your experience. We are glad you've taken advantage of our training resources, including coverage for the licenses you'll need to operate as an Independent Advisor with First Command. We've taken note of your comments about the challenges Advisors face in the early stages of a career, especially related to the approach you think you need to take to establish a new business. First Command does not believe in selling any one particular product. Instead, we focus on creating a holistic financial plan for our clients, understanding their goals on their path to financial security, and coaching them on the behaviors necessary to reach those goals. Our coaches match specific products and services that support our clients' financial objectives. We only seek advisors committed to this coaching philosophy, and we recognize that it does not suit all applicants.

A Culture of Service

Pros

It's easy to pay lip service to "serving those who serve," and as a veteran, I tend to despise cheap attempts to market to the military crowd. However, in my years at FC, I've seen nothing but heartfelt appreciation for, and a deeply rooted desire to support, those in uniform. You can earn a living anywhere, but not every firm will give you a sense of meaning.

Cons

MBA mind rot and the subsequent reliance on "strategy" consultants, as I'm sure is common at almost all firms, sometimes gives the impression that progress is more a game of shifting goal posts and semantics as opposed to marked improvement to our bottom line or efficiency.

Thank you for taking the time to share your positive experience and the benefits of a career with First Command. We seek to attract and retain talented people, including military veterans like yourself, who are dedicated to our mission. The mission of our company is incredibly important to our employees and Advisors. They tell us that one of the most compelling elements of this career is the opportunity to serve military personnel and their families in a meaningful way. We appreciate your feedback and will be sharing it with our executive leadership team.
