Thank you for taking time to share your experience. The mission of the company is incredibly important to our Advisors. They tell us that one of the most compelling elements of this career is the opportunity to serve military personnel and their families in a meaningful way. Our Advisors go through an extensive training program designed to equip them to succeed as independent contractors. Advisors learn how to build and grow their own business, serve new clients and provide quality, face-to-face financial coaching. They learn how to coach our clients to become financially disciplined and confident in their pursuit of financial security. Regarding the cost of operation, it’s important to note that office bills and other expenses are part of the financial responsibilities that come with being an independent contractor. Instead of receiving a salary and benefits, our Advisors earn competitive commissions and bonuses. And from that money they pay their business expenses. Throughout their careers, we equip our Advisors with tools for success, including ongoing investments in technology, marketing resources and continued leadership development. The rewards of hard work and dedication are a satisfying career, a company that fully supports you, and the opportunity to help those who serve in their pursuit of lifelong financial security. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience.

Thank you for sharing your experiences as a First Command Financial Advisor. I appreciate your comments on some of the benefits of this career, such as scheduling flexibility and training support. We provide new Advisors with an extensive training program designed to equip them to succeed. They learn how to build and grow their own business, serve new clients, and provide quality, face-to-face financial coaching. Regarding your comments on whole life insurance – we do not focus on the sale of any specific type of financial product. We offer products and services in the context of a comprehensive financial plan. For life insurance, our Advisors and employees study client needs, assets and any coverage already in place. If they find gaps in coverage, they will propose a solution. Term life insurance is a cost-effective option used to cover temporary needs. Permanent insurance products (like whole life) offer lifetime protection for permanent needs. We seek Advisors who believe in this approach and always put our clients first. In this way we maintain a culture that reflects the highest ethical standards and best practices of the financial services industry. First Command encourages feedback and constructive criticism. Our Advisors and employees are invited to discuss business-related problems with their supervisors or with any members of management. Surveys and reviews on Glassdoor and other sites provide us with additional insights. You can help us improve by sharing the specifics of your situation. Please give us a call at 800-443-2104 and ask for Human Resources. Again, thank you for taking the time to share your experiences.

Pros

You have the ability to work with deserving clients. Great for gaining experience.

Cons

To start with First command holds its self out to pay "you" the advisor the most commission possible. Now that I have worked at another firm and have several friends at other top firms in the industry I have discovered that their pay out multiples are the same in some cases and lower in most cases. The kicker to this is that on top of paying you a lower or average rate for the work you do virtually all other firms cover you technology, office, travel, benefits and education costs. This shows a huge flaw in the payment system alone. While the First Command Leadership promotes a narrative of empowering families their commission packages, sales competitions and leadership are all geared to selling the highest commission product to clients. The only way to survive in this company is to continually sell insurance products. This model creates a glaring conflict of interest and when it is address you are told "its just the way it is" In my experience District advisors where either absent or only mildly interested when trying to create a sustainable practice. I was even told I was take bread off of my DA's table after he swept the majority of clients out of my office and into his book so he could get paid more. Despite have a strong base of clients in the area First command leadership chose to actively not service existing clients and instead promote only new accounts. The scars of this practice where evident when I met with several legacy clients who had been passed from advisor to advisor with little to no notification, service or real planning. After talking with several other current and training advisors at other firms I discovered First command actually has the shortest training and mentorship period in the industry. where most firms will pay you while you get licensed first command has you do this on your own time. The difference is dramatic when you consider the 6 months you have to "go independent" vs. the 1-5 years most firms use to teach you how to build a sustainable practice. The culture is very used car sales in fact I even I was even pitched life insurance in my interview. so choose wisely when considering this a career option.

Thank you for your commitment and service to First Command clients and your willingness to share your perspective in a public forum. We appreciate that you have noted the ability to work with deserving clients as a positive element of serving at First Command. Our most successful Advisors tell us that one of the most compelling elements of this career is the opportunity to serve military families in a meaningful way. Four out of five First Command Financial Advisors come from the ranks of veterans and military spouses. For these Advisors, the career is about serving those who serve. It is about staying connected to the military community in a way that adds value to the lives of service members and their families by helping them pursue their financial objectives and goals. We must respectfully reject other claims in this posting. We are confident in the value of the opportunities we extend to those who wish to build a career at First Command. We offer competitive compensation. We provide comprehensive training and support. New Advisors go through an extensive training program designed to equip them to succeed as independent contractors. Advisors learn how to build and grow their own business, serve new clients, and provide quality, face-to-face coaching. We are at all times honest and transparent in our dealings with Advisors. We provide our Financial Advisors with the opportunity to realize financial success. However, we have found that those who are primarily motivated to sell products do not typically enjoy long-term success. Because in all of our dealings we put our clients first. First Command Financial Advisors focus on coaching clients to become financially disciplined and confident in their pursuit of financial security. We train them to address the spectrum of financial issues that clients face. Our focus is on risk management (insurance), cash management (banking) and investments to achieve long-term goals including retirement. We are committed to a client-first culture that reflects the highest ethical standards and best practices of the financial services industry. Again, thank you for taking the time to share your perspective.

Pros

I liked working at First Command because you get to work solely with military members. There is also incentives that you can receive to add to your commissions to make your income a bit more stable

Cons

During my employment, I had a $1,700 office bill I had to pay each month, and also a $300 payment that paid for something at the home office (I don’t even know what it was for). You also only get about 4 months on salary so you have 4 months to build your BOB and then you’re fully on commissions.

Thank you for sharing your experience as a First Command Financial Advisor. Many of our Financial Advisors tell us one of the most compelling elements of this career is the opportunity to serve military personnel and their families in a meaningful way. One of our most valuable offerings is the Fast Start program, which provides intense professional development to prepare new people to act as independent Advisors. Some of the benefits of that program include paying new Advisors during the training period and offering a full array of employee benefits. Through the program, our Advisors learn how to build and grow their own business, serve new clients and provide face-to-face financial coaching. As you mentioned, our Advisors are eligible to earn a strong income through competitive industry commissions on sales of financial products, plus additional annual and deferred compensation. From that money they pay their business expenses, including office bills. The rewards of hard work and dedication are a satisfying career, a company that fully supports you, and the opportunity to help those who serve in their pursuit of lifelong financial security. We appreciate your feedback and will be sharing your comments with leadership.

Pros

The home office will pay for all of your licensing (I received SIE, Series 6, 63, & 65). The San Diego branch has many advisors that genuinely want you to succeed.

Cons

By their words they will never admit that they want you to focus on selling life insurance but by their actions (mainly their compensation structure and short 6 month salary) you either find clients with millions to rollover into managed accounts or you sell life insurance to active duty military. At the end of 6 months you're 100% commission dependent and will have a ~$1,500 monthly office bill due on top of the basic cost of living in San Diego. This company is great if your young and willing live on a tight budget for 3-5 years possible working a second job to supplement the lack of income or if you're someone who has a pension income who's looking for a second career. Otherwise this company positions itself as a stepping stone to get licensed.

Thank you for sharing your experience. We are glad you've taken advantage of our training resources, including coverage for the licenses you'll need to operate as an Independent Advisor with First Command. We've taken note of your comments about the challenges Advisors face in the early stages of a career, especially related to the approach you think you need to take to establish a new business. First Command does not believe in selling any one particular product. Instead, we focus on creating a holistic financial plan for our clients, understanding their goals on their path to financial security, and coaching them on the behaviors necessary to reach those goals. Our coaches match specific products and services that support our clients' financial objectives. We only seek advisors committed to this coaching philosophy, and we recognize that it does not suit all applicants.

Pros

I love the work environment/people I work with. Clients are generally good and easy to talk to. Option to work from home. You are your own boss.

Cons

Hard to start out, depending on the market you start in. No choice in salary or commissions. It's straight commission. No lenience on your situation. Either hit the "quota" or you are gone. Mandatory "Fun Days" that you have to pay out of pocket for.
