Good but Hard

Pros

Great team environment where everyone wants you to grow. Upward movement can be unlimited, but lack of training hurts your chances first couple years.

Cons

Very sales oriented, especially towards insurance. Company does little to help you build your book and only markets towards military which hurts your outreach if not in a military town. Really depends what office you’re in but SF Bay Area is very hard for new advisors. Leadership increases production goals every year and if you’re business is service heavy towards existing clients, feels like a very far reach to hit their production standards without sacrificing servicing. Little to no support unless you hire and pay your own employees. Pays very low at the beginning and you end up not having enough to support your business by hiring employees.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We’re glad you’ve found value in the team environment and growth potential. We also acknowledge your concerns around training, market access, and early-stage advisor support, especially in regions like the Bay Area. Feedback like yours helps us evaluate how we can better equip new advisors for success and ensure our expectations are realistic and achievable across all locations. Your input will be shared with leadership for continued improvement.

Pros

I was given this opportunity to work in the company without having any prior knowledge of the industry. I have been given the opportunity to work in office and remotely. I have worked as a W-2 employee and as a freelance admin. During both opportunities, I have been given on-the-job training, bonuses, pay raises, incentives and room to progress in training and certifications. There is the this unique culture within the company that understands my lifestyle as a military spouse which has allowed me to balance my work and home life. Because of the connections I made in the company, I have been able to work in multiple districts, divisions and amongst multiple advisor teams.

Cons

There is a high turnover in the number of advisors I have had to work for and each office offers different pays and is not consistent across the company. Bonuses and incentives are all dependent on each independent advisor. And although I have been blessed to keep my position in multiple states, there were times I had to wait for the position to open before being able to work again.

We’re thrilled to hear how your time at First Command has offered you both growth and flexibility, especially as a military spouse. Your experience navigating various office types and roles while balancing home life is a powerful example of our mission in action. We also appreciate your thoughtful feedback regarding consistency in assistant recognition and training across Advisor offices. Since each office operates independently, compensation and team structure can vary, but we’re continuing to explore ways to share best practices and elevate support roles across the company.

Pros

10 years at First Command and I still love it! I have flexibility in my schedule. Plenty of time with family. Training is always provided and available if I want more. I am grateful I get to work with mostly military clients and support their pursuit of financial freedom by providing the highest level of service each day. Even though I have routine to my job, no day is ever the same, so I am never bored. I have learned a lot about finance while working in my role which has personally benefited me. My Advisor is very supportive and a pleasure to work alongside.

Cons

My specific office is very small, so I do not have many coworkers.

Great Company

Pros

The company offers a flexible hybrid schedule with three days in the office and two days remote. Benefits are excellent, schedules are balanced, and the work environment is supportive. Management encourages professional growth and provides training opportunities, while also offering strong job security.

Cons

Internal communication is generally good, though there is room for continued improvement. During busy seasons, management provides strong support to help teams succeed, and the challenges are similar to what can be found in most organizations.

Thank you for sharing a review of First Command. We often read positive reviews from our independent field force about the incredible training and onboarding programs available to them. We are thrilled you agree. Local Advisors set the pay and benefits for their office managers and other support staff professionals in our regional offices. In all cases, the goal is to attract the best talent and reward them for their dedicated service.

Pros

Working at the Colonial Heights office of First Command has been a life-changing experience. From day one, I’ve felt part of a mission that truly matters—helping military families and federal employees take control of their financial future. The leadership is supportive, transparent, and genuinely invested in your growth. You're not just a number here—you’re part of a tight-knit team that celebrates wins, learns from challenges, and always has your back. The training and mentorship are top-notch, and the flexibility allows you to balance your career with your personal goals. There’s a real emphasis on integrity, client-first values, and doing what’s right—not just what’s profitable. If you're looking for a meaningful career that combines service, strategy, and success, this is the place.

Cons

Honestly, not many. It's a job that requires hustle and dedication, especially early on—but if you're willing to put in the work, the rewards are more than worth it.

Pros

* Having a mission-driven company with a meaningful customer group gives a sense of purpose. * The Employee Stock Option Program (ESOP) gives a common goal throughout the company, which cuts back on the corporate politics I've encountered at other companies. * Leadership is investing in modernization, so being able to help update mature processes leaves an opportunity to make an impact. * Company culture generally values personal improvement, offering investments in personal training and goals that feel supportive of one's career.

Cons

* Decision-making can be slower than in less regulated industries. Although necessary, the combination of compliance, legal review, governance, etc. can make things feel like the move slow for someone accustomed to nimble decision making. * Modernization requires patience and employees have to manage expectations of timeline on some of the corporate improvements.

We appreciate your thoughtful feedback and are glad to hear that our mission, employee ownership culture, and focus on professional development have contributed positively to your experience. It's also encouraging to know that you've found opportunities to make an impact through modernization efforts and process improvements. We also appreciate your perspective on decision-making timelines and the pace of organizational change. As a highly regulated industry, balancing innovation with compliance and governance is an important responsibility, and we understand that can sometimes require additional patience. Best company I've ever worked for

Pros

It's not often that you get to work for a company that supports their employees and treats them less like widgets and more like family, but that is what I found at First Command. I spent over 20 years working harder and harder for other financial service companies and was asked to do more and appreciated less each passing year. I've now been at First Command for over 10 years and wish I could have been here so much longer. The fact that we get to serve the military community, especially when they most need us, makes it even more rewarding. Great benefits and recognition programs. Strong ESOP with top notch balance sheet management. Loyal and deserving clients. Overall good pay. Communicative leadership. Investment in professional growth and in growing technology. Training is strong and getting better. Worthwhile mission. Potential to grow as a company/employee is ready to explode right now.

Cons

No company is perfect, but I promise that folks here care and strive to do the right thing by all.
