Pros

-Upper management has a clear vision, company struggled with this in the 00's - Opportunities for advancement. I started as a seasonal call center employee and was elevated to a career track position within 1 year. - Atmosphere is positive since so many employees started in the call center or retail tax offices which requires a friendly and tactful disposition. - More diverse and open minded than average for companies in the KC metro, many women and gay men in leadership positions. Not overtly Republican in atmosphere like many small KS and MO offices.

Cons

- I didn't have an exit interview, or any contact with HR, which seems really weird after 3 years of employment. - Corporate culture is still very old-school in many ways, struggling to attract millennials. Creativity and self expression are only tolerated on the IT and customer service floors. If you work in Finance, or anywhere near the top of the building be sure to act composed and professional at all times. - Education and Development opportunities are minimal if you aren't in IT/Software Dev. No job rotation programs, leadership talks about training, but when I asked to take an SQL course or other analyst skills each year I was told that there was no budget. - Long parts of the year where I had no work to do, but since I was hourly, had to be in the office appearing to be busy. I really wish I could have done a job rotation instead of surfing the internet for 2 months.

Pros

Most of the tax pros were great to work with and you got to interact with a lot of different people. The schedule was pretty flexible and you could basically work the days you wanted.

Cons

Lack of upper management. You had to constantly problem solved and deal with irate clients when the manager would shy away. Also didn't get paid enough for all of the work they expected you to.

Pros

Great Co-workers Good job for high school & college students Flexible hours. Truly believe that costumers get exceptional service. You are offered the chance to take the tax classes they provide helping you get higher up within the company.

Cons

Upper management started to micromanage. Forced to make so many calls to clients it starts to feel like we are harassing them and most don'e like it. A lot of clients leave dissatisfied because of pricing and the office gets heat because of the client loss. I was hired early on but yet was not notified of training until two days beforehand. Training was more about how I should act with a customer and less about office duties and the program we use.

Not a bad seasonal job

Pros

I was at a location with good people, but I have heard from friends in smaller towns that sometimes workers are lazy and incompetent. I enjoyed working at Mattis ave. in Champaign-- there were plenty of experienced people who took the time to help less experienced people out. The training (3-4 months worth for a beginning tax associate) felt quite comprehensive, if you were to stick to simple forms. But I found myself working at much higher levels and having to do a lot of independent (but not unpaid) research on other state taxes and international taxes.

Cons

The first year isn't very profitable. The pay scale is minimum wage, with the promise that at the end of the season, you'll earn a bonus depending on how many clients and product sales you had. For the first year tax associate, it is basically impossible to earn a bonus. The upper management changes frequently for the Midwest region, so chain of command can be a bit confusing. Also, good customer service frequently relies on the receptionists to adequately communicate that there's been a drop-off, or a call came in for a particular tax pro, and sometimes it fails because most of them don't have any tax knowledge at all.

There is the appearance of a ceiling for moving into upper management from within the company.

Pros

I met a lot of good people, many of whom I still consider friends. I was promoted three times in just under six years.

Cons

The company claims to be client-focused, but much of upper management are unable to relate to the a typical client. Being unable to relate makes it difficult to the client's needs. After nearly six years, I was seeing the same problems that became the "elephant in the room."

Pros

Improvement of tax programs used to prepare clients returns. Some locations have great managers trying their best to sort out the company issues for the betterment of the client and employee. Seasonal work. Great way to make a few extra dollars. $20 for continuing education through

Cons

Managers hired without prior tax experience lack understanding of tax laws and regulations. Petty fighting between some office managers and stealing clients from other locations. Some times issues with balancing office support needs with prior projections from corporate locations. Call Center schedule clients when tax professional is not scheduled. If hours need to be cut the "computer" will cut hours even when a client is already schedule. Heavy sales push from upper management to push products the clients do not need.

Pros

Flexible hours and education classes.

Cons

Worked many dead hours to cover the shift because we had no CSP in our office. Retail managers who was hired for marketing had done nothing much for our area marketing. I have increased the revenue, clients numbers, higher NPS & product attachment and reached EA after my third season. I was told that my pay next year would be lower than my first year's wage. Remind you all, your wages - commision = comission after the tax season. Being a hard worker at H&R Block does not mean anything to the upper management.
