Pros

Employees are all remote & the company does send nice gift boxes occasionally to celebrate milestones. Gift boxes contain small desserts &/or company T-Shirts.

Cons

The leadership is astonishingly incompetent. I didn't meet anyone in leadership that had any prior insurance experience. There were no year end meetings to discuss performance &/or opportunities... no one knew if there would be any year end raise until a few days beforehand. There were compliance issues that inexperienced managers had no idea how to handle. There was very little advancement opportunities, only because the managers had no management experience, resulting in high turnover. The benefits were not ideal & the pay was low.

Pros

Most folks are friendly and there are interesting technical challenges. Space to learn and grow.

Cons

Executive leadership is disorganized and refuses to listen to folks with ideas on how to improve. Priorities are not clear and can change at the whim of an exec who wants their work done first. Multiple projects in flight with not enough people to work on them, and no desire to prioritize these projects in a sustainable and realistic way. Some product staff suffer from cognitive dissonance mostly because they have been force into that situation an example is the lack of understanding that asking a dev to "look" at something is essentially making that thing a priority over everything else. Some execs do not embody company "values" and there is no one to hold them accountable. Benefits are basic. Heroism is rewarded.

Pros

-Genuinely committed to a transparent, healthy culture -The very top executives are sincere in being customer centric -Talented people across all departments -When mistakes are made, the attitude is acknowledge it, fix it and move forward -Very respectful of work/life balance, only asking for weekend/ off hours in extreme cases -Lots of autonomy- if you are capable

Cons

-Fits and starts when it comes to expansion planning -Some bottlenecking in decision making -Managing through some regrettable turnover as the Company competes for talent with industries perceived to be be "cooler" than insurance -Still operating on tools and platforms that are not up for the scaling -Although improving, the benefits (specifically health insurance) are not great

Pros

There's still a small portion of kin that has great people. The benefits are also good.

Cons

-The advertise that they promote within but that is false as you rarely ever get to see anyone be promoted. The only people that did get promoted within are OGs who started back when kin had a handful of employees. The worst part is they hire from outside and have people who wanted the promotion, train the new hires. Again, this is across all departments as well. -Upper management doesn't care about anything but numbers and it's evident when people go to them and are quickly dismissed. -People are afraid to be honest. We have lattice reviews that go on every quarter, but people can't be open as the managers can read the reviews and quickly figure out who it is. Then there's another website they use that's supposed to also be anonymous, but we all suspect that it's not. -There's disrespect to certain departments such as CS. -When you volunteer to be part of a project you're put to do all the work and never get credit for it. This goes across all departments both on the sales and the tech side. -They put you to do work that is outside of your job description and you don't get compensated for it. If you even bring it up and ask for compensation for the extra work you get dismissed and get gaslighted into them saying they the opportunity is worth more and you should be grateful for even being considered. -A lot of people that did speak up for others are no longer with kin and its due to either them getting tired of speaking up without being hear or they got demoted or placed in a bogus made up role. -They waste money on useless things such as the "tacos" which is a platform that keeps track of how many taco emojis you receive. Not only do a handful of people use it, but that's money that could be going to people's pockets to keep them happy. -They did nothing to maintain loyal and caring employees. After speaking to people who have quit (all from different departments including uw,sales, cs, prod, etc) they all admitted to being undervalued and underpayed. -They claim to care about the culture but it all feels like it's just to claim that they're trying.

All Around Great Company

Pros

Competitive pay Strong team/all hands on deck atmosphere, with even executive level employees assisting when needed Most positions are remote Lots of opportunities for growth within the department you're hired into and within other departments High levels of transparency in terms of goals, progress towards goals, specific long and short term plans, hiring of executive roles Decent to good benefits (PTO, health/life insurance, paid and floating holidays, etc) Leadership is open to feedback and treats the members of their team well Actively demonstrates their dedication to diversity and inclusive of all races, genders, sexual orientations, disabilities in training resources

Cons

Very few: Health insurance isn't top tier Company is new, so there are expected growing pains and turnover- many departments are still creating and revising training materials

Cracks in the Foundation

Pros

Remote organization a plus during COVID. My teammates have been exceptional to work with: supportive, kind, and hard working people dedicated to solving problems. Good work/life balance.

Cons

Kin touts diversity and inclusion as a core value, but it is simply something to be talked about, and never to be followed-through on. If you ask why, HR says it's a "leading question" that they don't want to talk about. Compensation isn't the worst, but you can certainly make more money somewhere else with a lot less headache and frustration. Benefits aren't anything to write home about. If you work toward a promotion, you have a better chance of achieving it if you are white. Alternatively, you can easily take on a team title for extra responsibility, but with no extra compensation. Kin is not invested in the growth of their employees. Leadership is extremely hands off. The key to success is: ship your tickets, don't ask too many questions, and don't make anything their problem. Kin claims it has a blameless culture, which translates to no one gets blamed until something goes wrong - and it's rarely leadership to blame. Management has also demonstrated seriously questionable behaviors regarding people of color, where making discriminatory and racist comments is only the tip of the iceberg. A job at Kin is just a layover on the way to a real software company.

Pros

Truly, the only benefit of working for this company is that the position is remote. If it weren't for that, very confident 70%-80% of the work force would've left and that's being very conservative. There is a decent work-life balance here. It's more "laid back" than other strict organizations in the insurance industry. There's some D&I, but management is mostly white-washed. That's about it really.

Cons

Pay (sales specifically) is low compared to any other organization I've seen and it's not close; both in salary and commission. The commission used to be decent until it got changed again to "align with current market standards". Those who produce well now see a dip in their check for the same output of work, if not more, than they did prior to the change (no longer work here. This is what I've been told). There's about 13 or so sales managers (included are team managers and assistant managers). Only about 2-3/13 truly know what they're doing and actually bring value to the organization and department as a whole. Same goes for the current directors (2). Only 1/2 understands the industry as a whole and makes questionable decisions that later are seen as backwards thinking to the sales agents. The turnover is insane. For the 2 years I was there, I would say, in sales, there has been both from lays offs and resignations around 50-100. For a startup company that doesn't have more than 600 employees, that's quite a lot. A good amount would be about pay (sales and other organizations within the company included), but also lack of vision. Which leads me to the next point. Kin has lost their focus on helping customers. At it's very core, Kin was designed to make buying homeowners insurance simple yet thorough, amazing yet affordable. Florida is a very volatile market and insurers are leaving left and right, so Kin truly doesn't have the blame for everything, but the renewal increases are quite literally absurd compared to other carriers and they do it all in the name of profitability. This is something that can really demotivate the sales team as you see negative review after negative review posted online or when you speak to prospects. You want to back the company and of course sell, but it's very difficult to feel like you're enjoying what you're doing when existing customers, past-customers and prospects looking for a new insurer all have negative things to say about your company. Terrible benefits as a whole and no clear cut way on how to progress in your career.

Pros

Kin truly cares about its employees and values their experience. They invest a lot in everyone but especially managers. Earning potential is above market plus equity options and really strong benefits including paid parental leave.

Cons

Every company has their cons but with Kin they’re pretty minimal
