Data Team ( the great resignation)

Pros

The company took excellent care of its employees during Covid and didn’t lay off almost anyone. It’s a very stable place to work and people are friendly for the most part The company gave excellent agile training and training in new technologies The CEO took the time to speak with each team about the yearly goals which speaks volumes. In most companies CEOs never introduce themselves to every employee in the home office

Cons

In the span of a year the data team has lost numerous team members due to terrible management. This includes several data engineers , a scrum master, two product owners and several contractors. Be prepared to have production support shifts where you will need to be up at 5 am even on the weekend for two week shifts. This will most likely not be told to you during the interview of course. The management in this team doesn’t care for agile and will pull team members to work on random pet projects even if those team members are working on very critical and time sensitive items that the executive team wants them to work on. They don’t seem to understand or care that this type of behavior will result in lots of defects and garbage output.

Tough but fulfilling

Pros

You get to really make a difference. Not only do you work with the high net worth clients (most firms only care about those). But you also get to work and help younger military families. Sometimes it’s getting their tsp squared away, sometimes it’s getting them a debt management plan. You also get to create your schedule. And after a few years of building up, you also can make a great living, while also making a great difference in peoples lives.

Cons

I’m the beginning is tough. There is a lot to learn. You don’t have a client base built yet. And you have to really engage the community and get out there. Also, hours can be off in the beginning as you have to meet clients when they can. And sometimes that might be after they get off work after 5. After the first couple of years that goes away or calms down.

Thank you for taking the time to share your positive experience as a First Command Financial Advisor. The mission of the company is incredibly important to our Advisors. They tell us that one of the most compelling elements of this career is the opportunity to serve military personnel and their families in a meaningful way. Our Advisors go through an extensive training program designed to equip them to succeed as independent contractors. Advisors learn how to build and grow their own business, serve new clients and provide quality, face-to-face financial coaching. Through this hard work and dedication, they learn how to coach our clients to become financially disciplined and confident in their pursuit of financial security. Pros

-Small company: a lot of visibility into what other departments are working on, C-level employees will often join strategizing meetings, lots of interactions between business units. -very diverse employee group (speaking for home office). You get to meet people with a lot of different backgrounds and cultures. -covid was handled well and there were no lay offs.

Cons

-Below market pay. Raises are at levels near insulting especially given the inflation levels and the job market in 2022. -I did not feel ethically right working at a company that exploits the life situation of our country's military to push whole life insurance in the name of "financial planning". The business model as a whole felt like a step under a pyramid scheme. (google first command and see the honest reviews of what people say about this from a customer perspective) -the leadership at this company has their minds stuck in the command and control mindset. A lot of toxic behavior was observed in meetings such as threatening remarks of "get it done by my deadline or else..." -the agile transformation is hilariously bad. this company will go back to command and control in a heartbeat when they feel any form of pressure. the excuse is always "we are still growing". -Salesforce integration - if you are interviewing for a technology role, please ask them to explain their multiple failed attempts to fly in integrating the new CRM tool. No exaggeration, almost every employee in technology was forced to work day and night and all weekends for 3 weeks straight to attempt to integrate the new CRM tool with no extra incentive other than 1 free pizza. Most days would be 8am - midnight and even past. Every single day there were 2-3 leadership check ins to micro manage progress for each team and if your team was lagging progress, you were lit up by the chief info officer publicly. all of this because leadership completely failed to listen to the teams during plannings months before and gave an arbitrary deadline based on budget. This is what made myself and others quit. No sympathy for people, extreme micro management, incompetent leadership, and a failure to listen.

As an employee-owned company, we are committed to creating and nurturing a positive environment for all. Encouraging feedback and constructive criticism from our employee owners is part of that commitment. Regarding our compensation and benefits program, we offer competitive pay determined by third-party studies of employers in our market area. Another valuable financial benefit is the Employee Stock Ownership Program, which is available to all qualified employees and funded entirely by company contributions. Concerning your comments on whole life insurance, we do not focus on the sale of insurance products – or any particular financial product. Rather, we coach our clients to become financially disciplined and confident in their pursuit of financial security by addressing the spectrum of financial issues including risk management, cash management and investments to achieve long-term goals. In no way do we maintain any type of pyramid structure in our recruiting practices or client relationships. We are committed to a client-first culture that reflects the highest ethical standards and best practices of the financial services industry. Pros

Support getting licensed, clientele, exposure to the industry. Ability to make a positive impact in people's lives.

Cons

Nearly all of the company's marketing matetial is geared toward active duty, so it can be difficult to attract clients who are not military. The company provides a limited amount of exposure to active military community in the Tampa area, so the turnover is extremely high. The turnover also leads to existing clients being constantly reassigned to new advisors who may or may not make it past the first two years which is the critical failure period in the industy. Many clients complained that their old advisor left or that their new advisor never reached out. Lots of clients pulled their investments away from the company but because they still have insurance policies the clients stay in the database. The company markets itself as a financial advisory firm and financial planners but the number one product they require reps to sale is insurance. Yes, insurance is important, but reps who do not generate enough revenue are let go. The reason for this is that the company requires all interest in insurance commissions to be signed over to the company so trails do not belong to the insurance rep. The company keeps the trails and uses them to help fund advisor comp. The company constantly pushes advisors to meet a minimum level of new business every year to keep your seat. In this regard the company seems to value new sales revenue over maintaining and servicing clients. I saw this in the office I was in, a successful advisor with years of experience and one of most prestigious professional designations in the industry was pressured into leaving because he wasn't generating enough revenue for the company. In my 2 years with the firm atleast 12 advisors left or were not offered independent contractor positions. Corporate management seemed good, but at the regional and local levels it seems to have shifted focus. Instead of building the advisor force it seemed to be more about building their career and promoting to the next level. The company has a lot of baggage from products and services that were previously offered. I lot of clients love the firm, but there are plenty of people who were scarred by their advisor always wanting to talk about insurance and why they need more. Plenty of people would shut down and walk away once they heard what the company offers or its previous name. Having to tell people they do not fit within the company's client matrix so you can't offer them products is a bad part of the job. Having to tell people you don't charge a planning fee you offer " free" planning and are compensated when they buy from you (some advisors are allowed to charge a fee, but newer ones aren't). This is huge because there is a movement towards fee only advisors - not saying one is right or wrong.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Your willingness to provide detailed and thoughtful feedback is appreciated. We work to create and maintain a positive environment in which we welcome feedback and encourage constructive criticism. As you noted, our promotional and educational materials are primarily aimed at a military audience. They are our focus and reason for existence. Our Advisors tell us that one of the most compelling elements of this career is the opportunity to serve military personnel and their families in a meaningful way. Regarding life insurance, our company does not focus on the sale of any specific type of financial product. Our Advisors offer products and services in the context of financial coaching through a comprehensive financial plan. Financial coaching is our Mission, and financial planning and advice are our primary offerings. We waive financial planning fees for our active duty clients and make sure the cost of the financial plan is not an impediment to military families getting started as early as possible on their path to pursuing financial security. First Command seeks Advisors who believe in this approach and always put our clients first. In this way, we maintain a culture that reflects the highest ethical standards and best practices of the financial services industry. Thank you for your feedback and we will share your concerns with our leadership team.

Pros

*Virtual environment during Covid is well thought-out and planned *CEO cares about people and is very transparent on all things *Marketing Department co-workers/management are team players and hard workers *Many long-term employees show the company is stable and a desirable place to be long-term *Management is flexible with employees' needs *Work/life balance is important *Benefits are good, i.e. ESOP *Beautiful campus

Cons

*Behind in technology, but we know we are and are working hard to get there *AGILE environment isn't across ALL departments, so there is some disconnect *Department structure in Marketing needs some additions, i.e. need a marketing coordinator and a traffic coordinator to manage all the work in the department amongst different departments within Marketing *More engagement with management is desired (this is most likely due to the current virtual environment)
