H&R Block reviews about "training"

Some of the training materials are outdated.

The problem is that despite the fairly good training (which Block for some reason charges their employees for), there are few benefits in my opinion to advancing one's knowledge unless you are accounting student looking to earn a license and practice public accounting. The starting hourly wage is incredibly low for the knowledge required for the job, and there is very limited ability to earn more with experience. Yes there is a bonus system, but I doubt many preparers who have been with the company even for years are making a good salary (I'm sure there are a few). After working at Block for 2 seasons, and working on some pretty complex tax situations, I still make $3 less than what Target now starts out its entry-level retail staff. They also charge a pretty high rate and, in my view, prey on the poor and elderly. Block is an unfortunate example of predatory capitalism. I rarely feel good aboutt the work I do.

Where to start? HORRIBLE pay (MINIMUM WAGE and no commission, considering the amount of responsibility you have to take on), micromanaging office managers who will yell at you if you so much have any food on your desk. Yet they expect you to get new customers and sell H&R Block's services on your own time without pay, yet will ream you out if you take too long a bathroom break. They throw you to the wolves right away making you do tax returns that you're not prepared for and then when you ask a senior associate for help (if you can even find one that's not also swamped) they look at you with disgust like you're being a burden. They're constantly understaffed which when you consider the crumbs they pay first years should never happen. You have to pay out of your own pocket for required training. And God help you if you don't throw that bagel wrapper away fast enough after lunch, the desk police will come after you. EXTREME micro-management, I'm surprised they don't require permission to use the bathroom, which by the way they expect employees to clean since they're too cheap to hire a cleaning service. Unless you're looking to a career in tax preparation, just don't even consider them! It ain't worth the aggravation, pitiful pay and abusive micromanagement.

Too much training for the pay

Micro-management from the corporate level down is becoming an obsession within the company. Customer surveys are used negatively when measuring employee performance. The surveys combine questions about thing that are within the control of the employee with questions that are not such as whether the client is happy with the price. Wages for local office employees is barely above minimum wage although bonuses can be earned.
